What are orphan drugs?

Orphan Drugs are medical products that are used in prevention, diagnosis or treatment of rare diseases that are very serious or that pose a threat to people’s lives. These drugs are called orphans because under normal market conditions the pharmaceutical industry has little interest in developing and marketing products directed at a small number of patients affected by very rare diseases.
