Deep dive to elevate the potential of bivalves
Oceano Fresco is a biotechnology and agri-food company that applies innovative aquaculture techniques to grow shellfish sustainably and on a large scale, focusing on high-value species.
At Oceano Fresco they believe that it is possible to regenerate nature if we change the way we eat and the way we farm. Bivalves are a low trophic level protein source that consume few inputs (no feed, no antibiotics) and result in neutral or positive outputs, as they sequester CO2 in their shells and improve marine water quality. Oceano Fresco is dedicated to non-extractive, scalable cultivation with vertical integration of the various production phases and a commitment to science, innovation and biodiversity. Oceano Fresco began in 2015 and its main assets are a bivalve hatchery, an integral part of a biomarine center located in Nazaré, and the world’s first open sea nursery for clams, located off the coast of Lagos in the Algarve. Oceano Fresco is exclusively dedicated to the cultivation of native European species, with the main species currently being the pullet carpet shell (Venerupis corrugata) and the grooved carpet shell (Ruditapes decussatus).
All this is only possible with a dedicated team of biologists and scientists leading its R&D and selective breeding programs, awarded a ‘Seal of Excellence’ by the European Commission in 2021.
